>Completely ignored by the mainstream media, the European Union announced the new regulation on January 4, 2023 in the EU Official Journal. The approval begins 20 days after publication and must be implemented by all EU member states after 20 days (from January 24th, 2023) without exception.
>(7) In its scientific opinion, the Authority concluded that partially defatted powder of Acheta domesticus (domestic cricket) is safe under the proposed conditions of use at the proposed levels. The scientific opinion therefore provides sufficient evidence that partially defatted powder from Acheta domesticus(home cricket) when used in multigrain breads and buns, crackers and breadsticks, cereal bars, dry premixes for bakery products, cookies, dry filled and unfilled pasta products, sauces, processed potato products, legume and vegetable based dishes, pizza, pasta products, whey powder, meat analogues, soups and soup concentrates or powders, cornmeal-based snacks, beer-like beverages, chocolate products, nuts and oilseeds, snacks other than chips and meat preparations for the general population are subject to the conditions for placing on the market in accordance with Article 12(1) of Regulation (EU) 2015 /2283 is sufficient.
>(8) In its Opinion, the Authority also based on some less published evidence on food allergies related to insects in general, which did not clearly link the consumption of Acheta domesticus to a range of anaphylactic events, and based on data demonstrating that Acheta domesticus contains a number of potentially allergenic proteins, concluded that consumption of this novel food may induce sensitization to Acheta domesticus proteins. The agency recommended further research into the allergenicity of Acheta domesticus.
>(9) In order to address the Authority's recommendation, the Commission is currently examining the possibility of carrying out the necessary research on the allergenicity of Acheta domesticus. Pending the evaluation of the research data by the Authority and given that evidence directly linking the consumption of Acheta domesticus to cases of primary sensitization and allergies is inconclusive, the Commission is of the opinion that no specific labeling requirements related to the primary sensitization potential of Acheta domesticus should be included in the Union list of authorized novel foods.
>(10) In its opinion, the Authority also found that the consumption of partially defatted Acheta domesticus (house cricket) powder may cause allergic reactions in individuals allergic to crustaceans, molluscs and house dust mites. The Authority also found that other allergens can be introduced into the novel food if these allergens are present in the substrate that is fed to the insects. It is therefore appropriate that foods containing partially defatted powder of Acheta domesticus (house cricket) are labeled accordingly, in accordance with Article 9 of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283.
